Document Summary

South paid very little attention, north didn"t try to integrate. Radical republicans said president johnson was moving too slowly. North had no appetite for sustaining troops in the south, south reverted, there was some effort through the freedman"s bureau to help out the black but it wasn"t much. Southern churches were very important many black ministers taught schools, but many were uneducated, so was not very satifsfying. Rich northerners (toward 1890s) were starting to give away money ex: Long, slow struggle to get high schools in the south; of those that do exist, Whites are iffy about blacks being educated because it"ll just put notions in the heads of southern blacks, will distract them from their work and farming: sharecropping. Many blacks are still dependent on white landowners many southerners like this b/c maintains the two tier system w/o completely integrating society.
