Document Summary

Progressive education: traditional pedagogy, john dewey"s child-centered classrooms, progressivism in the school. In the late 19th century, lot of people who struggled as the overall economy boomed. Many children working in mines and factories, gaps between rich and poor become more pronounced as more people get considerable richer (i. e. vanderbilts), people making less than 500 a year. All kids regardless of money, should have a safe and secure childhood. John dewey"s child centered classrooms: fewer and fewer are spending time on the farm, a lot of what happens inside of school is official. Too often the curriculum doesn"t connect with the students: teacher requires work that is sustained by coercion and bribery. Often the curriculum was something the teacher didn"t even understand but had to follow: questioned all three. Should be active learning, by doing, my making things. Teacher is more of a facilitator and a coach, rather than a task master.
