Two reasons colleges were beneficial to a town: Colleges would increase the number of people who moved there. Showed they cared about their people and they will grow. Chapel attendance was higher and spread faith across the country. There was still a need for a national university paid for by the government. Like the ones in the european countries. Military academies were the closest thing we had to national university. National government was not present in education. Delaware college in the 1840s & 1850s. Must live on campus or with a respectable family. The idea that you should be supervised. Students had to provide their own furniture. Fairly small faculty, and very small set of students. Average salary was about for professors.
