No perks or benefits after you served. Effects of the war: country depends on common man to survive. Education of women is seen as more important, patriotism. Death by disease and wounds was greater. Conditions of surgery were so primitive compared to today"s practices. People in the north: books in school try to encourage patriotism and make it seem that there cause was the right one. Civil war put a spotlight on medical schools. People who took exams to become physicians failed. Hospitals were seen as more of a charity.
