First of all, this is difficult due to different diagnostic criteria between states. There are about 5. 8-6. 0 million students receiving special education this year in the us. About 59 million students expected in the public schools and charter schools. Counting parochial and other private schools during 17/18 school year. Therefore about 10% of school aged children receive special ed. Specific learning disabilities accounts for a bit under half of all students receiving education.
