ANFS251 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Protozoa, Dairy Cattle, Body Water
Document Summary
71% to 73% of the animal"s fat-free body weight. Water essential role in digestion, nutrient transport, waste excretion, and temperature regulation. Note: directly related to food intake (day to day impact) Chemically bound & released by metabolic processes. There can be a stream in the pasture as access but they don"t realize that the animals can tell how good/bad the quality is and not drink it. Body water can be lost in a number of ways: Urine, feces, lungs, skin surface, and milk. Kidney functions concentrated versus diluted urine. Consumption reduced, feed consumption and performance will be reduced. Note: increase losses with high protein, salt or fiber diet. Amount lost in feces varies greatly among species. Often water content in feces reflects the water content in the food. Lactating animals- dairy cow 100 lb milk per day, 87 lb water in milk. As water quality declines, consumption of water and feed intake also normally decline.
