ANFS241 Lecture 2: Feed Ingredients 2 10/28
Document Summary
Wsc or fiber carbohydrates, not starch: beet pulp, soybean hulls. Good for laminitis prone horses: energy from sugar or fiber, low in fat, protein varies, c:p ratio, about 10x the calcium. Wheat and corn dried distillers grains, still have nutrition. Similar to soybean meal but it is much cheaper: high in protein, high in fat, energy from fiber, low in starch and wsc, c:p ratio, high in p. Increase energy density without adding carbs: provides more energy without having to add starch. Mineral content of plants varies with soil, climate and growing stage: inorganic and organic form can be added, organic tends to be absorbed better by the horse. Vitamins usually have a sufficient amount of vitamins in a forge based diet: can be damaged by uv, degrades during storage, older horses have a harder time absorbing vitamins. Concentrate ingredients: general categories: forages, cereals, protein feedstuffs, non-starch carbs, distillery by-products, fats/oils, minerals and vitamins.
