ANFS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Proxemics, Depth Perception, Noise Music
Document Summary
Maternal behavior in cattle: amniotic fluid attraction, grooming and bonding. Do not want to interfere, maternal bond: vocalizations, nursing stance. Standing parallel to the mother when nursing. Allows the mother to smell the calf and know that it is hers: calves are hiders. Cows hide their calves when they go off to graze, may leave baby sitter cow to watch the calves. Maternal behavior in horses: thwart observation of foaling. Hide signs of pre-foaling: some initial licking, mare uses vocal and olfactory cues to recognize. Recognize voice and uses smell through nursing stance: foal takes longer to recognize mare, foal vocalizes to nurse. Makes a specific noise when it wants to nurse. Livestock behavior: temperament: genetics and environment. Genetically fearful tend to panic more often, can be flighty. Previous experience, good handling can calm genetic fearfulness. You cannot change genetic makeup: flight zone. Can be more stressful to an animal then physical pain.
