How strongly an individual identifies with his/her ethnic or racial identity is important to their political behavior. Garcia bedolla"s definition of identity: an individual"s self-conceptualization that places the individual either within or in opposition to a social grouping. Looks at identity formation both from an individual and contextual perspective. Accounting for both of these factors is particularly salient for immigrants-- because their identity does change based on where they immigrate to and what they will become. Recall the lee reading from week 1. If so, group consciousness leads to participation. This is difficult, particularly if one comes from a mixed heritage. Junn points to the banana case to exemplify the difficulty in subjective versus objective categorization. Again, we have to remember that these are socially constructed categories. For researchers, categories need to be constructed that are both relevant to the people and also signify the group"s location within the political structure.
