There are at least 25 supreme court landmark cases that deal with discrimination based on race and ethnicity. Cases on discrimination based on race and ethnicity (key witholdings) Dred scott v. sanford (1857) : people of african descent that are or were slaves and subsequently freed (and their descendants) cannot be us citizens. As such, they do not have standing to sue in federal court. because of their race is a violation of the equal protection clause empower congress to safeguards blacks against the actions of private individuals. Strauder v. west virginia (1880) : exclusion of individuals from juries solely. Civil rights cases (1883) : neither the thirteenth nor the fourteenth amendment. Plessy v. ferguson (1896) : segregated facilities for blacks and whites are constitutional under the doctrine of separate but equal (overturned in brown)
