MUS 114 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: The Yes Album, The Musical Offering, Woodwind Instrument
Document Summary
Three little pieces: 2: mute off, forte dynamics, much more intense, ends abruptly. Three little pieces: 3: mute on, piano and cello go back and forth. What do we hear: unexpected sounds from the cello: scratch, very high, pluck, mute, sliding, gliding. Asked to slow down, then go back to the original tempo, then accelerate, then go back to the original tempo. Again, mobile or sounding sculpture: the orchestra as a spatially expanded composite instrument. Introduce the new ways to passionately portray music with new instruments and new techniques. Can demonstrate much more passion in the same piece; expanding the abilities of the baroque period. All instruments have iconic sounds that are associated with an identity. Instruments take on characters like in a movie: debunks our expectations. Has a kind of shape, but these instruments with distinct characters keep morphing into different characters. Highlight the constant perpetual change: difficult to tell when one instrument stops and another plays.
