Even in north, majority of families still lived on farms. When lincoln talked about economic development, thought it"d be a proliferation of small business, supported equal opportunity for this economic expansion not the concentration of wealth that actually happened. After war, railroad entrepreneur and industrialist had power in federal government. Many businessmen who made it big after war got start during civil war because war gave much opportunities for profiteering.
