Recall: american revolution with 1st amendment: serving relationship between church and state (religious freedom) Prior to rev: states had established official church paid with tax dollars. Now: states can"t support or negatively influence any denomination of religion. By 1800s, state authority and support to churches started to fade. 1780-1820s: christian denomination started to build many churches. De tocqueville: no country in world where christian religion holds more power over men than america. Spread south and north (slave states to maine) Largest religion caused by those who were most aggressive for supporters. From upstate ny, erie canal (center of most dramatic, bustling economic commercial development) Gave up law, became preacher; ordained by presbyterian. Had charismatic style and message that won over 100,000s followers. Rejected calvinist idea of predestination (core of american protestantism) Insisted people could get salvation with free will. Can decide to be holy/good person => heaven.
