Document Summary

Lecture 2: role of mirroring in social cognition. Bigger brains evolved to understand each other, not the environment. Hands face and mouth are means of conveying socially relevant information. Map visual input on our own motor cortex. Perception action mechanisms which allow you to understand stimulus. Mirror neurons - fire when you see or do something. Found in area f5 - (homolog broca"s area) and inferior parietal cortex. Activated by goal directed action and observation of similar actions. Social dysfunction in high functioning autism results from not being able to understand others minds. Under certain circumstances the mirror neurons work for autistic individuals. Less suppression of mu waves when interacting with strangers. Mirror neurons allow us to understand faces. Hemorrhagic stroke - blood vessel burst and causes swelling. Ischemic stroke - blocked blood vessel causes neurons to die. Mirror theory - mirror in between arms. Mirror neuron therapy can help stroke patients regain abilities.
