BILD 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 29: Karyotype, Down Syndrome, Cytokinesis
Document Summary
When two parents give rise to the offspring. The offspring are unique combination of the genes from the parents. Has an evolutionary advantage because it can create adaptions in the chromosomes. The study of hereditary information and how genetic information is inherited. Each chromosome has thousands of genes attached to it. Humans have 2 sets of 23 chromosomes (46 total chromosomes) One set is from the mom and the other set is from the dad. Sex chromosome is the 23rd chromosome on both gender. The 23 pairs makes up the distinct chromosomes. Homologous pairs are the matched pairs between chromosomes. Matched pairs of your mom and dad"s chromosomes for the same chromosome. Chromosome #3 -> part of mom"s and part of dad"s chromosome. 2n = 16 means there are 8 homologous pairs. The dna is not identical because we have different versions of the same genes.
