Document Summary
Integrated absorption by the gi tract: flow of nutrients/other things out of the gi tract, each villus contains microvilli and these cells absorb things. In pharmacy, must create drugs that will not break down through the liver. Regulation of digestion: regulated by the nervous system and the gi tract: neurological: found that the nervous system was involved because if you cut the nerves of test animals, they would release saliva. Swallowing and gastric secretions are affected by the nervous system: ex: if you"re nervous, your stomach feels bad. If you think of food, you start to salivate, etc. Your digestive system is connected to the nervous system: gi self-regulation: releases things that affect the functions of digestion. Like hormones: experiment: bayliss and starling (1902) -> discovery of secretin (1st hormone discovered, before, known that injecting hcl into the intestinal lumen evoked secretion by the pancreas (bicarbonate and enzymes). Injecting the filtered extract elicited copious pancreatic secretion.
