BIPN 105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Korotkoff Sounds, Heart Valve, Brachial Artery
Document Summary
Korotkoff sounds: measure of blood pressure: sit down, arm at level of heart, put cuff around 80% of upper arm, wrap around and use stethoscope. Put bell of stethoscope on antecubital space (anterior of elbow: beginning: no sounds since flow of blood is laminar (no turbulence) Increase cuff pressure > systolic pressure to block brachial artery and block blood flow. No sounds: 1st korotkoff sound: slowly release pressure. Sound = systolic pressure (120 mm hg: by releasing pressure, artery no longer blocked, so blood flow can occur. However, still squeezed, creating turbulence, which is what the sound is: continue releasing pressure, in between systolic and diastolic pressure. Still have turbulence in the system: last korotkoff sound: when you no longer hear sound, cuff pressure = diastolic pressure (80 mm hg), since it is laminar blood flow now, so no sound.
