BIPN 100 Lecture 22
5/25/2018
First heart sound is S1
o Vibrations following closure of the AV valves
o lub
o happens at the beginning of systole

Auscultation is listening to the heart through the chest wall using a stethoscope
Talk most about the left ventricle because it pumps blood to the whole system of the
body
Stroke volume=EDV-ESV (in mLs)
o 70 mL in a healthy human
Two periods of isometric in the cardiac cycle: Isovolumic contraction and Isovolumic
relaxation
Preload: end diastolic volume
o In skeletal, it is the load put on the muscle before contraction
Afterload: minimum pressure in the aorta (PAO) or diastolic blood pressure
