BIPN 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Axon Hillock, Efferent Nerve Fiber, Oligodendrocyte
BIPN 100 Lecture 4
4/9/2018
• MEMORIZE OHM’S LAW
• Components of the nervous system
o Sensory components: detect events (inside or outside the body)
o Integrative components: process and store data (make sense of the information
coming from the senses)
o Motor components: generate movement or secretion
• Organization of the nervous system
o CNS: brain and spinal cord
o PNS: everything else
o Stimulus→send input signal via afferent/sensory neurons to the integration part
of the NS→CNS integrates the information→output signal sent via efferent
neurons to either the somatic or autonomic nervous systems and cause a
response
• Microscopic components of the nervous system
o Neurons: handle the information; the functional unit of the nervous system
o Glial cells: supportive cells
▪ Approx. 10-50 glial cells/neuron
• Structure of a neuron
o Soma with dendrites stick out, then converge into the axon hillock, axon,
synaptic terminal/vessels/synapse
o NT in the synaptic vesicles
