PSY 105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Executive Functions, Sensory Memory, Long-Term Memory
Document Summary
Theories of cognitive development: piaget"s theory, dynamic systems. Set stage for modern cognitive psychology: active learners, learn lessons on their own. Intrinsically motivated to learn: constructive processes, generate hypotheses, children are young scientists, perform experiments, draw conclusions, assimilation versus accommodation, assimilation. Integrating to what you know: accommodation, changes what you know and adds to it. Integrating and adapting reflexes: moving hands and legs. Should be able to do it but 8 year olds might struggle: conservation concept, asking if things have the same amount of liquid, skinny tall glass versus fatter short glass. Concrete operational stage: understand conservation, can solve problems with multiple dimensions. Formal operational stage: abstract and hypothetical reasoning, reason about what is and what might be. Systematic problem solving: eg piaget sandwich task, can think about deep questions, truth, justice, morality. Stage is not universal: not all adolescents or adults reach it.
