Adults prepare infants for language learning -- infant directed speech. Even before producing their own utterances, infants minds" are already engaged in the process of learning language. They are sensitive to the rhythm/melody of language in the world around them. Can show recognition/preference to language at birth ie. can discriminate sound contrasts between two different languages. Infants prefer to listen to infant directed speech (ids) Infants learn language quicker when they hear ids. The focus on melody of utterances to help understand their meaning. Focus more on melody than the actual words (message) Speech sounds from native language ie. sounds comprised of consonants followed by vowel. Babbling = stage of language acquisition, not speech production. Deaf infants exposed to sign language babble with their hands. Mostly nouns ie. mom, dad, siblings, pets, common objects, common actions, etc. Very few function words ie. and, at, the, of, etc. They must have initial assumptions about what words are likely to mean.
