Document Summary

Read thomson and marquis (the last readings for the course) We seem to know a large variety of things about: Global: no one knows anything at all (not) Limited: denies knowledge in certain areas or topics. External world: whatever exists outside and independent of our own mind(s) Ex: chairs, other people, trees, god, clouds, etc. You can"t know that the external world exists and you can"t know what it"s like. But not claiming that there isn"t some independent reality, just claiming that you can"t know that. Skeptics don"t deny the existence of the external world. Skeptics are not saying our beliefs are false, but that we are not well enough justified in our beliefs to have knowledge. In sv, you don"t even have to turn around to know the wall is still there you have a justified true belief. Often put forward various thought experiements possible but inconsistent with our knowledge of the external world.
