The problem of personal identity might be taken in a number of ways. We can distinguish these ways by asking questions: What evidence bears on the question of whether the person here is the one who was here yesterday? (see slides) The thing without which we would cease to exist. What does it take for persons to persist from one time to another that is, for the same person to exist at different times. Numerical identity: being one and the same thing. Identity of indiscernables if two things share all of the same properities then they are both the same thing. What does it take for one person to persist from one time to another we are taking about numerical identity.
