The first republic and the cold war. Big shift in perceptions that italian have of europe. Even more love for europe (europhillia is born) Post war leadership: alcide de gasperi and altiero spinelli. Europhilia was supported since italian left and right were decisively pro-integration of italy into eu. Right wing was naturally pro-eu because they believed in democratic process. Thought that italians need to be more forward looking/more modern. European identity can be a unifying factor. Italians are the only people that can make decisions for italy. Party that rose after the of first republic.
