The earth system a set of interacting shells or spheres, some extend over the entire globe and others cover it partially. Lithosphere: outer-most part of the solid earth, litho = rock. Atmosphere: thin layer of gases surrounding the earth"s surface. E. g. , oceans, lakes, rivers, groundwater, water vapor. E. g. , glaciers, sea ice, snow cover, permafrost. Geog 3a focuses on the atmosphere and hydrosphere (the oceans) Both the ocean and atmosphere are uids that cover the entire earth (well 70% for the ocean. ) But which is heavier: the ocean is hundreds of times more massive than the atmosphere.
