Document Summary
Gases assume the volume and shape of their containers. Gases are the most compressible state of matter. Gases will mix evenly and completely when confined to the same container. Study p, v, t behavior of gases to learn more about atoms and molecules. N = number of moles of gas. 1 atm = 760 mmhg = 760 torr. Pressure is the result of collisions between gas molecules and then surfaces around them. Atmospheric pressure and gravity are the two forces pushing down on the mercury. Gas hooked up to the j-tube, the gas is pressing down on one side, and the. + patm atmosphere is pushing down on the other side. The gas pressure is the pressure of the height plus the pressure of the atmosphere. P1 x v1 = p2 x v2. Pulling up increases the volume and decreases the pressure. Pushing down decreases the volume and increases the pressure.
