C LIT 30B Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Thesis Statement, Ekphrasis, Blue Book
Document Summary
No thomas hardy on the midterm, only everything before that. What is a village chronicle and give an example. Thesis statement: last sentences of an opening paragraph of an essay that outlines the overarching argument. Why the text is important, how it shows ideas, etc. Needs to clarify which texts are being read and which prompts are being addressed. Even if the topic sentence does this, still address the texts by name (you don"t have to fully introduce them again, but do acknowledge them specifically) "start with your thesis and end with your thesis" For an essay that is 8-10 pages, the thesis would probably be the first sentence. You can also say "thesis: ____________", just to make it very clear. For this purpose, the thesis should be one sentence. Makes a claim and opens the door for an opposing viewpoint. Try not to be vague; really be strong in your opinion/argument/point.
