Born before the end of the civil war. People began to legally marry (including her parents) as is was one of the new rights guaranteed to them after the war. It was no longer illegal to educate black people. White people also moved to the south to teach black students. Her mother was educated alongside her until she learned to read the bible. Her father was one of the trustees for black education. The economy was in crisis after the war, since there was no longer slave labor. Campaigns launched about black people being genetically inferior. Her parents and one of her siblings died trying to help heal others. The remaining 3 children were divided among friends and family. She left school to raise her siblings and became a teacher. Found a better paying job in the memphis school system. Black people began to migrate to more metropolitan cities in the south. Half of the population in memphis was black.
