Occur when there is injury to the tissues of the body caused by heat, chemicals, electrical current, or radiation. The highest fatality rates occur in children 4 years of age and younger and in adults over 65. Contact with chemical (ex. acid), injurious to eyes, skin, respiratory system. Remove clothing, wash area with water, eye wash station. Injury/destruction of tissue can result up to 72 hours after. Injury is worse the longer the chemical is on you. Elderly people fall outside and aren"t found so they come in with frostbite. Assessment- observe nasal flaring and auscultation stridor. May need to intubate 1-2 hours after the burn. Any change in breath sounds you need to notify the provider. Can"t smell co, might feel dizzy and lightheaded and can get carbon monoxide poisoning. Body isn"t getting the oxygen it needs for your vital organs. Blood is so filled with co2, need a monitor. Death- 20%of greater of co2 in body.
