Acid rebound as physiological response to increased ph associated with antacid ingestion. Response of the stomach and the cells comprised of the stomach more acid in response to the more alkaline environment. When we are taking substances that increase ph in the stomach results in breakdown in coating in many meds. Antacids have to be taken 2 hrs apart from any enteric coated medications. Do not prevent nsaid induced injuried if patients are taking nsaids for period of time, antacids, h2 and ppis not the drug of choice for patients. Puts them at increased risk for gi injury. Mode of action of h2 blockers- block action of histamine on the receptor of the parietal cells along the stomach. P450 drug metabolism is specific to a class of enzymes responsible for biotransformation of drugs tagamet: decreases flow f blood to hepatic circulation- therefore inhibits p450 drug metabolism.
