Document Summary

Chapter 7: some human aspects of organizing (cont) Delegation of authority - managers use authority to assign duties to subordinates, making them responsible (accountable) for carrying out those activities. Thought a manager delegates downwards, they are still accountable too. Assignment proceeds in steps from the top down. The subordinated should be provided with the resources needed to perform assigned tasks. Relieves the manager of work the subordinate is capable of doing. Gives the subordinate the chance to develop themselves, and gives them pride in taking responsibility and initiative. Puts decision making closer to the work being done, resulting in more practical and prompt decisions. When an engineer becomes a manager, they are responsible for other people"s work on top of their own work. Manager must give challenging yet feasible work to subordinates. Manager must let subordinate do their work even if the manager can do it quicker/better. Managers should not take on problems of subordinates, but should help when needed.
