37 views2 pages

Document Summary

Federalists are biggest group in republican area. In today"s lecture we will see that things are changing in latin america. Taking control by force does not work. In venezuela and colombia, the liberals come back into power in 1860s. Cuba and puerto rico are still under colonial control. Interesting because countries got their in different ways (wars, empires, civil wars) Liberals focused on economic and trade progress which helps people"s lives. Textbook calls this the commodity boom (wood, cotton, food (wheat, coffee, sugar, fruit), tobacco) b/c rich countries need. Side note: coffee can only be grown in perfect atmosphere. Colombia is doing very good with coffee. Brazil is today"s largest producer of coffee. Now liberal republicans because they have age of free trade and private property -> liberal politicians grow with the economy. Divided into three countries eventually regrows by 1930. Us supports northern rebels in colombia -> becomes panama (1903) Us supports because they want to build the canal.
