Catholic church owes up to 40% of good land (agriculture, access to water or other resources) Church accumulated land and never gave any of it up. Liberals hate this, they want land to be bought and sold. Traditionally indigenous way of life, town shares the land. Market demands sugar, cotton, tobacco and wheat which increases the need for haciendas. This is pinnacle of liberal private property. Do not think of a ranch (w/ lots of cows) Liberals: haciendas in northern borderlands and rancho owners in north. Liberal government wants haciendas to grow and expand. They think the church and communal land is not conducive to progress. Conservatives: indigenous people are scared that haciendas are growing and growing and will eventually take all the land. Napoleon iii wants to be his uncle. Conservatives go to him asking for a habsburg to be their king. French invade mexico on grounds that they have no way to pay their debts.
