â—Ź Decimation in california, 1850-1880 white civilians killed nearly 5,000 indians. Through
disease, poverty, native population dropped from 150,000 before civil war to 30,000 in
1870
â—Ź Dawes and Severalty Act of 1887: Eliminated communal ownership of native lands.
Instead, land was allocated to individual owners. Children taken from parents and put
into white-controlled schools for assimilation. Languages forbidden from being spoken,
and forced into Western dress.

â—Ź Expeditors in 1879- 50,000 people moved west escaping terrorism/oppression by KKK
and other groups, able to experience new opportunities

so many years, if you cultivate this land then it will be yours
â—Ź Various white groups that were moving west, conditions: industrialization, irish were

â—Ź Most poor people in the US up until the 1990s were white christians

â—‹ People were oppressed for many reasons, not just by race

â—Ź Conditions: incredibly impoverished and living in slum conditions, nasty, diseased filled
places with crimes and stench (feces from people/animals), crushing poverty
â—Ź Efforts made to alleviate these conditions with the Homestead Act
â—Ź Very few people were moving out west seeking freedom or greater democracy, instead
they were seeking economic opportunity
â—Ź Working class: barely make it out
â—Ź Schools: native americans were being sent to be civilized like whites
