The Transition to Parenthood
Anderson & Sabatelli: Chapter 11
During the transition to parenthood
● Identities are transformed
● New roles are assumed
● Family system rules require adjustment
transition to parenthood is like any stressor event, identity of parents are transformed, whole
family system has to be transformed in some respects have to develop new ways and strategies
for meeting all the different existing tasks of the family as well as incorporating rules and
customs that come with taking care of the new baby
Family System Transitions
Transitions, Stress, Adaptability & Coping
Key Concepts – Transitions = System Stress
● Family system stress
■ altering the family system
○ Horizontal stressors
■ stress over time in the family
■ ex: pregnancy and childbirth
○ Vertical Stressors
■ prophecies and myths of the family (legacy)
■ how you deal with stress has to do with multigenerational patterns
and processes, transition to mother/fatherhood has so much to do
with the family you came from.
■ ex. if you come into mother/fatherhood with disconnected or cut-off
relationships with own family will affect how you parent/your stress,
the stress with parenthood is either mitigated by connections or
amplified by bad connections
○ Coping Resources

■ The relationship you had with your parents and dynamics impactthe
transition to motherhood and fatherhood. Disconnected
relationships vs. good relationships
○ Coping Efficacy
■ can be exaggerated by negative connections. Negative legacy
evokes emotion the remind you of bad family.
How does this discussion of System stress and Adaptation Apply to the
Transition to Parenthood?
- altering the family system itself and figuring out how you’re going to be a parent
- parenthood is how you experience being a parent, parent is how you meet needs
of child, the family system itself is going through reorganization
Pregnancy and Parenthood can be thought of as examples of
Horizontal Stressors – How these are managed is some function of the
coping resources available within the family as these interact with the
Vertical Stressors Present
Identity Tasks
● Shifting family themes
○ to become more child centered, how use resources time and energy either
for or not for children.
○ ex. grow up in child focused family good effort made to meet child's need.
if grow up in adult focus family time and energy is put towards what
parents want to do. different environments become what influences our
environment
● Taking on the identity of “mom” and “dad”
○ begins in pregnancy, accelerates during the birth process, and needs to
be in place when the child needs them
External Boundaries
● Adjusting connections to family members
○ connections and associations with outsiders are altered
○ demands that you allow information from outside to come into the system
○ relationships with outsiders
■ friends, grandparents (access to baby without feeling overwhelmed
by their presence)
● Reworking ties with friends

○ males - whipped: special term for our society who focus on their partner
and their children
○ being a man = taking care of themselves vs. taking care of their family
(society has altered our view)
● Seeking out information and support
Internal boundaries
● Reworking patterns of separateness and connectedness
● mom and dad’s patterns of separateness and connectedness need to be
worked on
● women tend to pressure partner to be more connected when she is
stressed
● primary underlying causes of conflict : time together vs. time apart -
want different things
● everything you’ve done about this now have to be reworked when having
a baby: more housework, finances
Maintenance tasks
● The “traditionalizing effect” of babies!
○ babies have a traditionalizing effect on maintenance patterns
○ women become more in charge of housework even though they have
more of a responsibility taking care of a baby
○ more men tend to do more “manly” tasks
○ doesn’t feel fair to women even though they engage in this pattern, going
to complain about it later on
○ but yet, both parents participate in this traditionalizing
○ women have a higher level of emotional intelligence, know not to fight
about something when there’s already too much on their plate, but as time
goes by, women will be frustrated (vertical stressor)
Maintaining the Emotional Climate
● Anxiety, stress, emotional support and empathic responsiveness
○ key = empathic responsiveness
○ fundamental rule between personal stress and empathy
■ stress goes up, empathy goes down
○ mothers and fathers become more stressed and need empathy, but they
become less empathetic to each other because they are stressed - conflict
in a non-supportive way
