HDFS 1070 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Individuation, Ice Cube
Document Summary
Focus on identity and individuation (process of reworking parent-child relationship, degrees of autonomy) Values pressure to develop these, need to resolve in order to enter adulthood. Identity: commitment and understanding of self, comfort with working model of self, spending less time worrying. Anxious identity: lingering persistent anxiety, uncomfortable, constantly worrying, state of crisis and extended adolescence. Perpetually uncertain, not planning or committing for future. Ex. deciding career too early in college, end up disliking job and life. What"s necessary to help you get through is role experimentation. Society has to help and encourage adolescents gain experiences and back off pressure. Time to experiment identity issues without excessive pressure to foreclose or commit. Very few actually get it because its hard for parents since they are anxious for you, some have wisdom to let you have experiences. Volunteering, interning, gap year/break period, community service, college, study abroad, time off from school.
