Out of the blue, john brings mary a box of chocolate turtle clusters. Behaviors and objects are symbols- they represent more than just their tangible qualities. There are multiple truths (not a single truth) The processes of perception and judgment with which we make sense of our social worlds. By 5 seconds, our first impression is fully formed. Allow us to immediately stereotype and categorize others. Confirmation bias- when we think something, we tend to notice things that are rights, and ignore things that would prove us wrong. Set us on a path for how we interpret future interactions. Primacy effect- first information we learn about something is the strongest most influential information we receive. People are typically overconfident in their beliefs about others. Unfortunately, accuracy often doesn"t increase over time, but confidence that you"re right does- so the gap grows over time. Existing beliefs are influential at every stage of relationships (not just at the beginning)
