See anderson & sabatelli chapters 1 and 2. A shared sense of history: there is a multigenerational legacy, history goes through time, your family has existed through time. Things that happened 20+ years ago are still somewhat present in your life. Some degree of emotional bonding: positive or negative bonds, or conflict and tension. Families are characterized by different degrees of bonding. Some family members are very caring while others are very hostile. You have a connection, whether positive or negative connections. Strategies for meeting the needs of family members: families have certain tasks or needs that they meet. Grew up with your biological parents, single parent family, divorced family, your parents remarry. There is more people do not know than what they do know. Family dynamics: how multiple generations of the family interact with one another, how people relate to one another, ex. Your family is different no matter what your composition is.
