ENGL 2407 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Terry Bisson, Bears Discover Fire, Michael Swanwick
Document Summary
Grotto of the dancing deer (clifford d. simak) Would you want to live forever if it meant being invisible: no love, no friends, not rich. Usually when you see immortality, it"s because people want immortality, not the affects of it: you can kind of feel bad for him, but then remember he chose this on his own. Ending can be positive, shows life just goes on. Relationship between donna and ross is realistic, happens often. Makes characters believable: the more you care about them, the more upsetting donna"s choice is, piggy wishes to know how to get up the stairs. Compared to russ, donna makes a good wish. Not sure if she is in love with him or just wants to fix him. Not really a science-y story, just one outstanding event. When grandma dies, nice ending, sweetness to it: unexpected in what the story can do. Bears and fire both violent creatures, but neither are in this story.
