Verbal communication: a system of symbols and codes used to construct and convey messages: symbol: arbitrary, human made referent: object for which the symbol stands. Connotative meaning: secondary meaning; heavier; interpretive the meaning: cocky vs confident, nitpicking vs meticulous, pushy vs assertive, stingy vs economical, cheap vs inexpensive. Private meaning: triggers emotions; no one else understands. Language shapes the way we see the world: strong determinism: language outright determines us, weak determinism: language has an influence, does not outright determine it. We take assumptions into our life and make conclusions about things: dichotomies. It"s either one or the other: equivocal language. Talks about all of these different terms to mask what we are trying to say. We"re very conscious of the language that we use: can make conversation, cleaning it up can avoid the problem at hand, our words have power. Sexism and language: occupational nouns belonging to certain genders. Language indicates our history: tends to elevates men over women.
