Document Summary

The study of matter, energy, and the relationship between the two. Law is an observation you can observe many times after doing multiple experiments. All substances (in principle) can exist as a solid, liquid, or gas. Substance can be converted from one state to another without changing the identity of the substance. Form of matter with definite composition and distinct properties. Physical combination of two or more substances. Smallest particle of an element that has the properties of an element and can enter into a chemical combination. Do not require measurement and are usually based on observation. Can be observed and measured without changing the identity of the substance. Ex: boiling point (phase transformation), density, freezing point. Results in a change of composition; the original substances no longer exist. Ex: iron and oxygen + moisture = rust (rusting or oxidation), combustion, digestion. Does not depend on the amount of matter. Properties that can be measured are called qualitative properties.
