Culture: primary non-biological means by which humans adapt to their environment. Ordered system of beliefs, expressive symbols, values and knowledge. In terms of which groups define theri world, express feelings, make judgements, cope with environment. Manner in which groups learn to organize their behavior in relation to their environment. Everything that people think, have, and do as members of a society. All behaviors have a basis in the human brain (ex. ability to learn a language) Seems easy to distinguish, but in practice, is difficult to distinguish. Shaped by humans, but also shapes human behavior. Habitus: learned culture absorbed in the course of daily practical living. Parents with child, child with peer group. Shared ideas of proper behavior, degree of predictability. Traditions have accumulated without a break in continuity. Aspects of culture fit with each other. Culture shock: psychic distress caused by the strains of adjusting to a different culture or different behaviors.
