Differs if donkey or horse varies depending on physiological state: Very thrifty- get a lot out of fiber and aren"t easily dehydrated. Need a lot less feed than horses/ponies (why they are used in 3rd world countries) Better feed digestibility than ponies or horses. Very tolerant to dehydration (decrease water loss) Can rehydrate within a few minutes after they get water. Don"t need to be fed as much as horses. Energy feeds- some horses, and donkeys and meals dont need this. Additives- make feed more attractive to horse or owner. 3-to minimize digestive dysfunction- make sure they are getting sufficient forages. 4-to regulate consumption of feeds by group-fed horses(diff age groups need diff things) 1. 5% of body weight/day of good quality roughage or access to pasture (minimum) 10 lb kentucky bluegrass- comes up early in spring. 1 lb ladino clover- legume= fixes nitrogen for other plants, and tastes good for horse.
