PUB HLT 150 Lecture 15: Week 7 Thurs – Surveillance
Document Summary
Continued watchfulness over distribution and trends of incidence thru systematic collection, consolidation, evaluation of morbidity and mortality reports and data with dissemination (spread) to those who need to know so action can be taken. Goal is to use surveillance to prevent/control disease. Detels: collection of health data for use in planning, disease control/prevention, halth promotion, ongoing, timely analysis, easily understandable, dissemination of results + action based on results, periodic evaluation of the system. Monitor changes/trends in health factors such as : prevalence/incidence of disease, risk factors food safety, emerging diseases time distribution, geographic distribution, risk group distribution. Detect outbreaks/early warning systems: human, zoonotic diseases survey avian species, food safety, drug resistant organisms. Provide health info to design rational intervention programs. Evaluate effectiveness of intervention strategies (vaccines, behavioral programs, legislation) Diagnostic algorithm must be able to diagnose condition that you"re screening for. Need a representative sample: vs. want infected individuals only if you"re trying to find the reservoir.
