PSYCH 130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Dollhouse, Collaborative Learning, Lev Vygotsky
Document Summary
Vygotsky: children learn according to the same general principles but differ depending on social situations and who we are surrounded by. Children as teachers, not just passive learnings. Teaching is a process that is sensitive to the learner - aware of the learner"s knowledge level. Humans are one of the few members of the animal kingdom that teaches. Vygotsky emphasized language as the most important aspect of learning. Important for cultural transmission - who we are. More knowledgeable others are guiding the less knowledgeable. Collaborative learning: students work in teams, discussing with each other; children learn from each other. Scaffolding: adjusting the support offered during a teaching session to fit the child"s current level of performance. E. g. when initially introducing a puzzle to a child, you have to basically teach them everything; eventually they learn how to do it with some reminders; gradually pull away support in this interaction.
