Sharp divide btn the people and enemy of the people . Tripod of power: party, gov, and army. Each was a sep eschelon, each tied together by comm leadership. Of those 3, the party was the most important. Real party was exercised by politburo of 19 members. Standing committee was 5 members ccp controlled not only the government but gov as well. Communist cadres would go into a village, isolate cleavages, and select people to be activists and lead land reform. Fermenting of activism got out of hands, esp in poor areas. Speaking bitterness sessions - outrage welled up until landlord would be beaten or humiliated until he lost all power. 1-2mil landlords killed in this phase of revolution. Land reform ended the gentry as an economic class.
