GEOG M107 Lecture 20: Geog M107: Week 10, Lec. 20
Document Summary
Final due 5pm tuesday- return in person (paper given friday) Heat: gases such as o2 are less soluble as water becomes warmer; certain species require cool water. Certain salmon species require colder water to reproduce. Released water on top of dam is warmer (heated by sunlight) than water released on bottom of dam. Wastewater, particularly in arid regions, will be warmer than natural stream water. Industry source of heat in humid regions because water is used to absorb heat from various industrial practices. Most natural organic compounds biodegradable, but some can be serious pollutants when concentrations too high. Most synthetic compounds resist decomposition (pcbs, ddt) Toxic metals: anything is toxic if concentration too high. Several heavy metals most likely to cause toxicity problems. Lead, mercury, nickel, zinc, arsenic, silver, selenium. Sewage: raw sewage dumped into rivers, bays, coastal waters, and lakes all over the world. Half treatment plants in us only provide primary treatment.
