Document Summary

Atmospheric drought: some combination of low humidity, high temperature. Soil drought: when water supply is diminished by low soil moisture resulting from low precipitation, low soil permeability, and/or low soil storage capacity. Annuals have short growing periods, escape drought by growing and reproducing fast. Plants evade drought by having large absorbing root systems, low transpiration rates, or mechanisms for reducing leaf area or closing stomata. Plants endure drought by having water storage organs or by shedding leaves and becoming dormant. No plant growth = grazing animals may die. Droughts come and go with no advance warning, people hesitant to move. People in developing countries with no centralized way to get food are the most affected. Production of new soil stalls if no organic matter being added. Water conservation management must decrease runoff, reduce et, reduce deep percolation, and prevent unnecessary loss from storage.
