Week 1, lec 1 an overview of literacy in society. There are 875 million people in the world are without access to literacy. There are 13 million children who don"t have access to school. Some emerging countries it includes are mexico, chile and turkey. It works closely with emerging giants such as china, india, and brazil, and also helps improve developing economies in africa, latin america and the caribbean. This survey defined literacy as, the ability to use and understand information that is fundamental to daily life at work, at home, and in the community. o. Fundamentals are things you read everyday like clocks and social sites. Each literacy skill was rated on a scale from 0 to 500 points. Prose literacy, document literacy, and numeracy scores are grouped into five levels of competency. The five cognitive levels that are measured in the survey: level 1 is 0-225 points.
