ZOO 3733C Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Carpal Tunnel, Ulnar Nerve, Rheumatoid Arthritis
Document Summary
Rare abnormal hereditary condition caused by defective ossification of the cranial bones and complete or partial absence of the clavicles: defective ossification of cranial bone delays closing of cranial nerves and produces large fontanelles. Buldging fontanelles- out(cid:449)ard (cid:272)ur(cid:448)i(cid:374)g of a(cid:374) i(cid:374)fa(cid:374)t"s soft spots. Complete or partial absence of clavicle draws shoulders together. Nerve injuries due to fractures of the humerus. Surgical neck axillary nerve damage: abduction, flexion & extension of the arm are affected. Middle shaft- radial nerve damage: (cid:862)wrist drop(cid:863)- all extensors and supinator paralyzed. Medial epicondyle- ulnar nerve damage: digiti minimi is damaged, claw hand. Typically caused by fall or blow, and thus the humerus to pop out of socket. Symptoms: shoulder pain, arm held at side, slightly away from body with forearm turned outward. An ulnar (medial) collateral ligament injury in a sprain may lead to abnormal abduction of the forearm.
